Spring First Article Inspection: Dimensions Are Only the First Layer

First article approval should cover revision, material, process, functional load, appearance and production control.

Spring First Article Inspection: Dimensions Are Only the First Layer

Sample approval is not about obtaining a few parts that look correct. It confirms that materials, equipment, processes and inspection can support production.

Lock the revision

The report should reference drawing revision, model, technical agreement and approved deviations. Mixed revisions make otherwise valid data meaningless.

Verify material and process chain

Grade, wire size, heat or lot, heat treatment, finish and special processes need traceability, especially when performance depends on processing.

Validate function, not only shape

Measure specified load or torque, assembly function and required life in addition to critical dimensions. Include functional-gauge or customer-fit feedback.

Convert learning into a control plan

Sensitive dimensions, setup points and methods discovered during sampling should drive production checks, sampling and reaction rules.
